The annual Spring Showcase has arrived again in 2021 and will open Thursday, April 15 at 10am!
The showcase is a competitive, juried exhibition that is meant to allow students to explore new concepts and techniques while pursuing personal work outside the assignments in the classroom. Just like last year, our students are still coping and working around issues caused by the Coronavirus. They have found new, interesting solutions of working within these constraints and we are excited about the work they have created!
There is a limit to how many pieces will be included in the show, only 20, and the exhibition is open to all students, not just those in the Digital Media Art and Design (DMAD) program. This makes the showcase very competitive and the jury process very challenging!.
Meet This Year’s Guest Judge
Christina O’Neal is the Media, Creative Arts, and Technology Director at Sullivan Baptist Church. She studied Digital Media Art and Design at King University and graduated in 2019. Art has always been a part of her life; however, she wasn’t always sure about making a career out of it. It was always important to her that her career would be something that would make a difference in someone’s life. She now works on a variety of projects in her current position ranging from graphic design to videography, audio, web design, and even mobile app design.
Being a King DMAD alumna, she has participated in the Spring Showcase herself and had work included three times. She especially enjoyed working on pieces for the showcase because it allowed her to work on something outside of class projects, without constraints. It gave her the opportunity to experiment and try techniques that she hadn’t tried before. She recalls how the community at King, especially within the DMAD program, was helpful in her growth as an artist. People from different walks of life and different perspectives gave suggestions to make her work better. She found that the critiques in the program helped her a lot, especially now in her current position where she needs to cater graphics to a wide variety of audiences.
The Spring Showcase is not only an opportunity to help students get their work out there, but it also gives them valuable experience. From submission to exhibition, the students experience what it is like to enter work into juried competitions. For those students whose work makes it into the show, it is also a great resume builder.
Please join us virtually as we celebrate their hard work on Thursday, April 15th at 10am! You can find the gallery here: https://kingdmad.com/springshowcase/
