The end of the Spring 2018 semester provided several opportunities for DMAD students to share their work in public displays.
This year, DMAD held its fourth annual Spring Showcase event. All DMAD students, including those in the introductory Photo Foundations course, submitted work for inclusion in the showcase. The top twenty images were selected by a panel of judges and put on display in the King’s Den TV lounge.
The images were unveiled at the opening reception on April 7, which included a trivia competition and an audience choice award. Alumni were present to offer students valuable perspective on post-college life. Every year, the exhibition offers students the chance to build their résumé and share their creative process with other students.
Two 2018 graduates also held their senior exhibitions. Graduating seniors each produced a senior thesis show from initial concept to final execution. Students must manage both the artistic demands of creating a body of work and the logistical challenges of orchestrating a public event. The work demonstrates the fully rounded skill sets they have developed within the program.
Fused, presented by Danielle Stauffer showcased hybrid images which included portraits blended into imagery of locations important to the portrait subjects. Danielle values the experience she gained in organizing an event on a tight deadline. She said, “It’s given me a real perspective on how it’s going to be in the real working world.”
James Russell Ballowe presented Shape of Industry. His work featured landscapes composed of the towers and scaffolding of industrial facilities. “The senior thesis exhibition is a very challenging thing to plan and pull off successfully,” Ballowe said. “This has not been easy, but I have learned so much about myself and my work through this project. I have definitely grown as an artist this semester and reaching the next level of expertise is certainly within my grasp. I have enjoyed every step of the way and can’t wait to show off my work!”
