DMAD Professor Joseph Strickland was featured in multiple publications and exhibitions over the summer of 2018. LoosenArt, The Onishi Project, and Edge of Faith magazine all featured work from his series Ghosts: A Look at Manufacturing in America. Pieces from the series had previously been displayed in Seoul, South Korea and the Ink & Letters journal.
LoosenArt is an online art platform that focuses on contemporary art. It partners with various galleries to support its line up of exhibitions. From May 3rd to the 13th, one of Strickland’s photographs was displayed in the Absences exhibition in Rome’s Millepiani gallery. As he was in Italy on a study abroad trip with King students and faculty for most of May, Professor Strickland was able to attend the exhibition.
The Onishi Project is the management arm of the Onishi Gallery in the Chealsea district of New York City. They hold exhibitions to connect art patrons to emerging and mid-career artists working in a variety of mediums. From July 9th to the 20th, three of Strickland’s photographs were on display as part of the Summer Group Show III. Professor Strickland was in attendance for the opening reception on July 12th.
Edge of Faith is an online magazine that discusses modern societal issues from a Christian perspective. Their April issue featured Professor Strickland’s work on the cover as well an in several spreads.
“I’m always excited to show my work,” said Strickland. “The real intent of these images is to invite the audience to engage not only with the ideas that are presented within the photographs, but also with other people who may approach those ideas from a different point of view.”
Strickland makes work in the local area but with an intent of reaching all types of viewers and places, from blue collar workers to professional art critics. Showing that work in a variety of cities and countries demonstrates the way in which art can reach everyone in different and equally substantial ways, meeting each viewer at his or her own level.
Strickland’s work, including the Ghosts series, can be seen online at his personal website, Joe-Strickland.com.
