Another year has passed, and so has another festival! King University students took to the streets to cover the 2017 Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion. The festival once again brought in massive crowds with headlining acts including Dwight Yoakam and Judah & the Lion. King DMAD students and staff worked this year to produce and edit over 9,000 images, documenting hours of music, activities, food, and celebration. This year, King students aimed to use only their very best work, refining the broad approach of previous years.
Veteran of past years returned to the event, but this year was the first for six students who quickly adjusted to the conditions and requirements of event photography. First year student Fausto Crapiz considered the event fantastic for developing experience. He found great chances to sharpen his skills against harsh lighting conditions both indoors and outdoors. Student Miles Taylor has been in the DMAD program for years but first attended the festival in 2017. In addition to improving technical skills, he found the event to be a chance to overcome anxiety and bond with fellow students. He said, “If [the students I worked with] hadn’t been my friends at the beginning, they would’ve been by the end.”
King students weren’t working alone, however. The High Road Agency once again partnered with King, providing organizational structure and giving students first-hand experience working in professional media coverage. Video footage was provided this year by Loch & Key Productions. They also offered learning opportunities, explaining to students the basics of their editing workflow and demonstrating industry standard color-grading tool DaVinci Resolve. Participating students were given several unique opportunities to experience real working conditions.
